Chapter 18: Tuesday Meeting
The Ashdown Mechanical office occupied the ground floor of a tan building off the Boise interstate, and I had walked through its glass door every weekday for twelve years.
On Tuesday morning I walked through it with a lawyer I had met an hour before.
He was tall and gray and carried one thin folder.
In my hand was a signed court order, still warm from the printer.
The judge had read it at nine.
She had read the company's books at nine-ten, because I had handed them to her myself, tabbed and in order.
At nine-thirty she signed.
The front desk was empty.
Through the glass wall of the conference room, I could see the whole staff gathered around the long table for the Tuesday meeting.
Six technicians in blue shirts, two dispatchers, the office manager.
Curtis stood at the head of the table with a pointer in his hand.
He saw me through the glass and his face lost its color.
I pushed the door open.
"Audra," he said. "You can't be here."
"I can. I'm still your wife and still your bookkeeper, and I have papers for you."
"Not in front of the staff."
"You didn't mind the staff on Labor Day," I said. "You had movers."
The office manager had stood up at her chair.
She was sixty, with silver hair and a cardigan she wore all year, and she'd hired me for the books before I ever married him.
She said nothing, but she put her hand flat on her heart.
The tall lawyer laid the order on the table.
"This is a temporary order from the Fourth District Court," he said in a courtroom voice. "It freezes all payments from Ashdown Mechanical to Teague Mesa LLC and Teague Mesa Consulting, effective now."
