Chapter 20: Swing Votes

On Friday morning, two cars turned into my driveway.

The first was Skye's, back from a night shift.

The second was a gray station wagon I knew from board dinners.

The woman who climbed out of it had silver hair and a briefcase.

The vice chair got out the other side with his cane.

I met them on the porch.

"I won't take much of your time," the woman said. "I'm a director of Lindmark Marine, and I've sat across from Bernadette for twenty years."

"I know who you are."

"Then you know I'm not here for coffee." She looked past me at Orin, who stood in the doorway with his cap in his hand. "Young man. I saw you on the news."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Your father used to bring me tomatoes."

He blinked.

"He had a garden behind the dry dock," she said. "I still have the pot he gave me. May we come in?"

We sat at the kitchen table with Dale's banker's box between us.

I didn't read it out.

I turned the folder around and let her see the first page.

It was the real death certificate, dated three years back, with a neat blue signature.

She read it twice.

Then she read the second sheet, a list of monthly payments from a company account to a doctor in Naples, Florida, in round numbers.

The vice chair read over her shoulder, and his old face went gray.
