Chapter 5: Statement
The deputy was about fifty, with tired eyes and a notebook he didn't open.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry to do this at your door," he said. "I'm with the county sheriff."
"Then come in out of the wind," I said.
Dale started to follow him, and I stood in front of the doorway.
"Just the deputy."
"Mrs. Lindmark, I'm the family's counsel."
"You're Bernadette's counsel," I said. "I haven't hired you."
The deputy gave Dale a look, and Dale stayed on the porch.
Inside, the man from the couch stood in the middle of the living room with his cap in his hand and the scarred side of his face turned toward the light.
He had taken it off himself.
The deputy took in the scars, the bandaged hand and the banner on the wall.
"Sir," he said. "Your name?"
"Hamish Lindmark."
"Date of birth?"
He gave it.
It was the date on my husband's driver's license, and I knew it by heart.
"Do you have identification?"
"It burned in the fire."
"What fire?"
"The warehouse in Rotterdam," he said. "I lost my passport and my wallet. I was in a hospital for most of two years. I came back to Minnesota by a boat that didn't ask for papers."
"That's not what I was told," the deputy said slowly. "I was told the man is dead."
"I know," said the man on my couch. "My mother has a certificate that says so. It's wrong. I'm standing here."
The deputy turned to me.
"Ma'am. Is this your husband?"
Behind me on the porch, Dale made a polite coughing sound.
"Mrs. Lindmark," he said through the open door, "you should know that a sworn statement contradicting a foreign death certificate may carry consequences."
