I watched the whole video in the tipped van with the heater ticking.

Shana said she'd used a stock photo online to protect her little girl's privacy.

She said the real girl was home in bed, too sick for visitors.

She said the delivery driver had been stealing from her mat for a year, and last week it was the medicine.

"I'm not asking for money," she said, wiping her eyes. "I just want her to stop."

Then she put up a link for donations.

The comments were the worst part.

Somebody wanted my home address.

Somebody said they knew where the depot was.

Mitch took the phone out of my hand, very gently, and turned it face down on the dash.

"Don't read the comments, Hoyle."

"There's thirty thousand of them."

"Then you'll never finish. Save your eyes."

The salt truck came at two-fifteen.

The driver pulled us out with a chain.

We finished Route 14 after dark.

At every door, I sat in the passenger seat with my hood up, because I didn't want anybody to recognize me.

At stop forty, the porch light came on anyway.
