"Don't let him in, Mom," I said. "I'm coming."

"Your father hasn't let him past the mat."

I was already out of bed, looking for my pants.

Mitch sat up, the sheet around his waist, his hair sticking up on one side.

"Keith?"

"At my parents'. On the porch."

"I'm driving you."

"You don't have to."

"Becca, you're putting your polo on inside out."

I looked down.

Downstairs, his grandfather was standing at the stove in his suspenders with a spatula.

He looked at me in my inside-out shirt and didn't blink.

"Good morning, young lady."

"Good morning. I'm so sorry. I have to go."

He wrapped four strips of bacon in a paper towel and put them in my hand.

"Eat in the car," he said. "Never fight hungry."

Mitch drove my car to Centerville with one hand and kept the other on my knee.

The sun was just up and the roads were salted white.

When we turned onto my parents' street, I could see Keith from three houses away.

He was standing on the porch in his good coat with a cup of coffee my mother must have given him.
