The hearing was the last Thursday in February, in a courtroom downtown with radiators that banged.

I wore my mother's navy blazer over my brown polo, because I was going straight to work after.

My lawyer from the strip mall wore a tie with little sailboats on it.

"For luck," he said.

The gallery was not supposed to be full for a divorce.

It was full.

My parents sat in the first row, my mother with her purse on her knees.

Norma sat beside them in her red fleece vest.

Mitch sat behind me in a borrowed sport coat that was too tight across the shoulders.

His grandfather sat next to him in a tie.

In the very back row, in her dark wool coat, sat the detective from Kettering police.

Keith came in alone.

No lawyer.

He sat down at the other table in a gray suit that didn't fit him anymore, and he didn't look at the gallery.

The judge was a woman in her sixties with half-glasses and no patience for the radiator.

"Mr. Hoyle," she said. "You're representing yourself?"
