Chapter 23: Closing Ranks

I got to Miami Valley before Mitch did.

Route 14 is closer.

His grandfather was in a curtained bay in the emergency room, in a gown with little blue diamonds, with his suspenders folded on the chair beside him.

He opened his eyes when I pulled the curtain back.

"Lutz," he said. "Good. You came."

"Of course I came. Mitch said you were asking for me."

"I was." He found my hand on the blanket. "Somebody has to wind the clocks on Sunday. He over-winds them. He's always over-wound everything."

I laughed and it came out wet.

"That's why you asked for me?"

"That's one reason." He squeezed my fingers. "The other is he's going to come through that curtain like a truck, and somebody needs to sit on him."

Mitch came through the curtain like a truck.

I sat on him.

It was a broken hip.

They put a pin in it the next morning.

He was in the hospital five days, and the whole family showed up, and half of it wasn't his.

My mother came the first afternoon with a casserole she wasn't allowed to bring onto the floor, and she brought it onto the floor.
