Chapter 24: Thanksgiving Again
My father didn't answer him right away.
He looked at the grill.
Then he looked at Mitch.
Then he reached over and pulled the back door shut, gently, right in front of my face.
I stood there with the dish towel.
My mother came up beside me and took it out of my hands.
"Go sit down, Becca," she said. "Some things aren't for you."
They were out there twenty minutes.
When they came back in, my father went straight to his recliner and turned on the football game.
Mitch came in behind him with his ears red, and neither of them would tell me a thing.
He sang in van 22 for a month.
In the first week of November we bought Route 17.
We paid for it from what 14, 15 and 16 had made since June, and nobody's grandfather was involved.
We hired two drivers of our own.
Somebody drew a little crooked crown over LUTZ on the board.
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving I loaded Route 14 at five in the morning, like always.
Halfway down the shelf, I picked up a small box and read the label.
