Chapter 17: Everything He Borrowed
I went out onto the front step before he reached the walk.
Dad came behind me, and Marilyn behind him, still holding the saucer.
Todd stopped at the bottom of the steps in a wrinkled blue shirt, with a face the color of a dishrag.
He had slept in the car.
You could see it in the creases on his cheek.
"Beth," he said. "Don't start. I just want my things."
"Todd," said Marilyn.
He looked past me, and his whole body flinched.
"Mom. What are you doing here?"
"Returning something."
He tried a smile.
"Look. Everybody's upset. Last night got out of hand. I'd like to get my golf clubs and my laptop bag and my other shoes, and then I'll go and give you space."
"It's my house, too," he added, in a smaller voice.
"It's jointly owned," I said. "You can have the clubs."
I walked across the porch and pressed the code into the garage keypad.
Four digits, our anniversary, which I had never thought about until my finger did it.
The door rattled up.
The garage was exactly the way he kept it.
Pegboard, labeled bins, a red shop-vac, and a long shelf of tools hung in order of size.
Todd loved that garage.
Todd took people into that garage to show them the garage.
"There," I said. "Take what's yours."
He went straight in and reached for a black golf bag in the corner.
"Todd," said a voice behind him.
It was the man from next door, in his seventies, in a sun hat, wiping his hands on a rag.
He walked past Todd without speaking, took hold of the golf bag, and turned the tag toward the light.
His own name was written on it in marker.
"Those are mine," he said. "You said you'd have them back for the Fourth of last year."
