Chapter 4: Cold Dogs
The loading dock behind the third-base gate was empty by eleven.
My father's truck sat at the bottom of the ramp with its engine ticking.
Dad had handed me two hot dogs in a napkin before I climbed out of the cab.
"One's for Dani," he'd said. "She hasn't eaten since lunch, I can tell from here."
I sat on the edge of the concrete with my feet hanging off and the napkin in my lap.
Dani came out of a steel door at ten past eleven.
A security guard walked her to the edge of the lot and went back inside without a word.
Her lanyard hung against her shirt with nothing clipped to it.
She stood in front of me for a second with her hands in her back pockets.
"Is that a hot dog?"
"It's an apology."
"It's a Dollar Dog."
"It's cold."
"Perfect," Dani said, and sat down beside me and took one.
She ate half of it in two bites.
"Suspended," she said, with her mouth full. "No pay. Hearing Tuesday at nine. I can bring one person."
"I'm your one person."
"We'll see."
I turned the napkin over in my hands.
I had practiced this in the truck, and every word of it was gone.
"In June," I said, "I told you that you wanted me lonely too."
"It was a good line." Dani looked at the dark parking lot. "I thought about it for ninety-one days."
"I'm sorry."
"Okay."
I waited for the rest.
"That's it?"
"That's what I've got tonight." She finally looked at me, and her eyes were red around the edges. "I'm not going to tell you it's fine, Dolan. I just ran the longest nine innings of my life, and I'm eating a cold hot dog."
