Chapter 22: A Check on the Concourse

Hallie's POV

They carried Delaney off the ice on a stretcher, and the arena watched her go in a silence so complete that I heard the wheels.

"Vitals are normal," one paramedic said to another, not quietly, as they passed the gate.

Somewhere below us a man started to laugh and then thought better of it.

I stood in my row with Bridget's arm around my waist and the old man's binoculars hanging forgotten from my hand.

On the boards behind the home bench, the sponsor's logo flickered once and went black.

Then the one next to it went black.

Then the whole line of them went, one by one.

"That's the replay guy," Bridget breathed. "That's him. I'm going to marry him."

"You're not."

"I'm going to name my dog after him."

I laughed, and it turned into something wetter halfway through.

Down on the ice, a very large number of people were chanting.

It took me a moment to hear it.

"Hal-lie. Hal-lie. Hal-lie."

I didn't lift my hand this time.

I put it on Bridget's shoulder and let her scream.

Colby found me on the main concourse twenty minutes later, by the closed pretzel stand.

He had the hoodie on, and his face looked scrubbed.

The six regulars stood in a half circle behind me, arms folded.

"You said tonight," I said.

"I said tonight."

He held out a white envelope with both hands.

People slowed as they went by, and then stopped, and then phones came up, and he didn't look at them.

"The lease company took the key back yesterday," he said. "They refunded the months I hadn't used. It's a cashier's check, ten thousand six hundred and sixty-six dollars. It's made out to you."
