Chapter 9: Five Thousand Dollars

I pushed open the door of the Corner Tap and the bell over it rang.

Colby sat at the bar with his back to me and a beer in front of him.

Bridget stood across from him, polishing a glass so hard it squeaked.

Six regulars were scattered through the room, and every one of them was watching the television that wasn't on.

"There she is," Colby said, without turning around.

He swiveled the stool and gave me his easy smile.

It had worked on every teacher and landlord and bank teller he had ever met.

"Hal. Look at you. You're bleeding."

"It's gauze."

"Sit down. Let me get you something."

"Colby."

"I came to fix this."

Bridget set the glass down.

"He's been here forty minutes," she said. "He's ordered four waters and he's tipped me nothing."

Colby took an envelope from his hoodie pocket and slid it down the bar.

It stopped in front of my empty stool.

"Five thousand," he said. "It's what I have. It's yours."

I looked at it.

"Delaney takes the video down," he said. "You drop the divorce papers for now, and we both say it was a stressful week. Nobody's the villain, Hal. Nobody needs to get hurt."

"You took forty-one thousand dollars."

"I borrowed it."

"You bought her a ring."

"I borrowed it for us."

"For us," I said.

He nodded earnestly.

I looked at the envelope, and then at the men at the end of the bar, who had stopped pretending to watch the television.

"You want me to take five thousand dollars," I said clearly, "so I'll tell the internet it was my fault."

"I didn't say that."

"You said nobody's the villain."

"I just want us to be adults."

Bridget lifted her bat from under the bar and set it on the counter without a word.
