Chapter 10: Happy Birthday, Sandra

Sandra Seddon turned sixty-one on Thursday.

I knew because I'd been to six of her birthday dinners.

Always the same Italian place in Clifton, the one with the striped awning and the waiter who sings.

Always the long table at the back, booked under Seddon, eighteen of them.

Always Steph next to Alfie, and me at the far end next to the aunt who talks about her bunions.

I was there by eight.

Nobody had invited me.

I'd spent Tuesday at my solicitor's office on Corn Street. She had read the charge, then read it again, and then said a word solicitors aren't meant to say.

Then she'd drawn up two documents.

They were in a plain brown folder under my arm.

The singing waiter recognised me at the door.

"Mrs. Seddon! Your table's at the back. They've started."

"Thanks," I said. "It's Cardew, actually."

The long table was full.

Alfie's aunts. His cousins and their husbands. A tray of garlic bread going round.

Alfie's dad at the head, in his good shirt, quiet as always.

Sandra beside him in pearls, a paper crown on her head that one of the cousins' kids had made.

Alfie two seats down.

There was an empty chair next to him, with a napkin folded on it.

Steph's chair.

Sandra saw me first.

Her wine glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

The table went quiet in a ripple, from her end to the far end.

"Happy birthday, Sandra," I said.

"What are you doing here?"

"I brought you something."

I put the brown folder down on the tablecloth, between the garlic bread and the olive oil.

Alfie half stood up.

"Tash, please. Not in front of everyone."

"You did it in front of two hundred people," I said. "This is only eighteen."
