Chapter 12: Every Screen

"She's shut it," I said.

Nathan sat up so fast he nearly hit the sloping ceiling again.

"Can she do that?"

"She owns sixty percent. She can do what she likes with the doors."

I scrolled through the barmaid's messages.

Chains on the front. Locks changed on the back. Note on the door. Nobody paid.

Then Nic's.

Have you SEEN it. Where ARE you. Oh my God are you at HIS.

"She doesn't want the pub," I said slowly. "Not anymore."

"What does she want?"

"If the pub stops paying, the bank comes after the guarantors. That's me." I put the phone down. "She'd rather lose the Hound than let me save Gran's house with it."

Nathan was quiet for a second.

"That's not business," he said. "That's spite."

"Steph's always been very good at spite."

I was dressed in four minutes.

He drove me to North Street with his knees round his ears.

The staff were standing on the pavement outside the chained doors.

The barmaid. The barman. The cook in his whites. Two weekend girls.

A van from the brewery was idling at the kerb with nowhere to drop its barrels.

The barmaid saw me and threw her arms up.

"She's done it, love. She's actually done it."

"I know."

"We've got a christening booked upstairs at four! Forty people!"

"I know."

I didn't know how I was going to open it.

I stood on the pavement with no keys and no plan, and North Street started to gather round.

Then my phone rang.

Nic, shouting.

"There's an envelope on your mat! I'm at yours with your post, it was through the letterbox, it's got Alfie's writing on!"

"Open it."

Paper tearing.

"It's keys," Nic said. "Three keys on a Spain keyring. And a note."

"Read it."

"I never wanted it to go this far. These are mine for the back and the cellar and the office. She doesn't know I've still got them. A."
