Chapter 18: The Other Camera

I didn't hide behind the window.

I put my notebook in my back pocket and walked out through my own front doors.

Half the pub came out behind me, pints in hand.

Nathan came last, ducking under the door frame, and stood at my shoulder.

"That's the other lot," he said quietly. "They do car crashes and lottery winners."

"Which am I?"

"Tonight? Both."

The white light hit me as I stepped onto the pavement.

The reporter was young, with a very bright lipstick and a voice to match.

"Natasha Cardew? We're live. Steph Yeo says you forced her to sell her pub to you under threat."

Steph stood beside her, arms folded, chin up.

She'd redone her make-up. She'd had time to practise.

"She cornered me in front of a mob," Steph said to the lens. "She threatened to sue me. She threatened to ruin me. I signed because I was frightened for my safety."

Someone behind me laughed out loud.

"You signed on a gatepost," said the barman. "Then you threw the pen at a hanging basket."

The reporter ignored him.

"Do you deny it?"

"I offered to pay her debts for her," I said. "In front of sixty witnesses. She can have them all on her programme if she likes."

Steph smiled.

She'd expected that.

"Sixty of her own customers," she said. "Her sister. Her boyfriend." She said boyfriend like it tasted bad. "But I've got someone who was there from the start. Someone who knows exactly what she's like."

She turned and waved up the street.

"Alf! Come here!"

I looked.

Alfie was standing at the bus stop opposite the bookies with Sandra.

Waiting for the taxi his dad was too busy buying rounds to share.

He froze.

"Alf," Steph called again, warm now, the voice she'd used on the bar. "Come and tell them."

Sandra grabbed his arm.
