Chapter 16: The Pen

Neil was sitting on a bench in the service corridor with his tie in his fist.

Nobody was near him.

The guards stood at the far end, politely looking at the ceiling.

I had the divorce papers in my bag, in a blue folder from my lawyer's office. I had been carrying them since Monday.

I took them out and held the folder against my chest.

"Jo." He didn't stand. "I'll sign. Whatever it says."

"You haven't read it."

"I don't need to." His laugh had no sound in it. "I'd have given her everything. The suite, the car, the stroller. I told her I'd raise him as mine."

"I know."

"For a baby that was never..." He stopped and covered his eyes. "What kind of man does that?"

I could have said many things, and some of them I had earned.

"The kind who doesn't ask a single question," I said, "because the answer might cost him something."

He lowered his hand and looked up at me.

For the first time in ten days he wasn't performing, and I found I didn't want to see it.

"The house stays with me and Miles," I said. "The company is mine and always was. You keep your own savings and nothing from the twelve women's money. Your lawyer has seen all of it."

"Give me a pen."

I gave him mine.

He signed on every flagged line and didn't look at any of them.

He handed it all back, and the pen with it.

"Can I say goodbye to him?"

"That's Miles's choice. Not tonight."

"Okay." He stood slowly, and his knees cracked. "Okay."
