Chapter 15: Off the Books

"Don't go in there," I said.

"I'm already at the door."

"Aaron. She's Silvio's mother. There'll be a soldier at the bar."

"There's a man in a leather jacket reading a menu at the bar. He looks like he'd rather be home." "Stay on the line. Don't say anything."

He put the phone in his shirt pocket.

Everything after that came through cotton.

Then a man's voice, warm and surprised.

"Mathers! Pull up a chair. You know Mrs. Castellucci?"

"Only from the wall," Aaron said.

Ottavia's voice was as calm as church.

"The young man with the car. I've heard so much."

"What's she doing at your table, sir?"

"Having lunch. Mrs. Castellucci has been helping the office for some months. A cooperating source." The deputy chief's voice didn't change at all. "Not that it's any of your business."

"She's the boss's mother."

"Who better? Sit down, Aaron. Have the veal."

"Somebody gave the boss my witness's address this morning. He walked up four flights with roses."

A silence.

A fork set down on a plate.

"I'm going to finish my lunch," Ottavia said. "You two discuss your office."

I heard her chair. I heard her heels go past.

I heard her stop.

"Tell her I'll light a candle for the baby," she said, close to the phone. Then the bell over the door.

The deputy chief's voice dropped, and the warmth went out of it.

"Outside."

"You've been off the reservation for a month," the deputy chief said. "You've stopped writing reports. You're sleeping in the witness flat. I hear you carried her up the stairs."

"She's on bed rest."

"She's a mob bookkeeper who's played you since a hospital room. You're done, Aaron. You're off the Castellucci file as of now. Hand in your badge for the building. The apartment closes tonight."

"And her?"

"Bring me the drive she's sitting on, and I'll handle her personally."
