Aaron didn't call an ambulance.
He looked at the line of yellow cabs on Centre Street and the traffic stacked up behind them.
Then he put two fingers in his mouth and whistled.
The first cab stopped so fast the one behind it honked.
"Hospital," he told the driver. "The closest one with a baby unit. She's thirty-one weeks."
"Thirty-one weeks and two days," I said.
"She's counting," he told the driver. "That's a good sign."
Delfina got in the front and turned around in her seat to hold both my hands over the headrest.
"Breathe," she said. "In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Like you're blowing out candles."
"I don't want to think about candles."
"Then like you're blowing smoke at Ottavia."
I laughed, and then the first real cramp came and I stopped laughing.
The hospital was ten blocks away. The driver got us there in minutes and wouldn't take Aaron's money.
They put me in a room with a window on the river and a monitor that beeped with her heartbeat.
