My Husband Left Me Dying for Her. I Made Him Regret It novel · Chapter 7 of 32

Chapter 7: Heir

"Yes," I said.

There was no point saying anything else. The date was in blue pen.

Silvio folded the picture along its old creases, slowly.

He put it inside his jacket, against his heart.

"You lied to my mother's face," he said. "In my house. About my child."

"My child."

"A Castellucci." He said it the way priests say amen. "That's my blood in there. My name."

"Your name isn't on anything of mine anymore. You had it filed."

He laughed, and this time it wasn't the easy laugh.

"That was a birthday present. The lawyer undid Arianna's papers on Monday. Twenty-four hours, like I promised." He spread his hands. "So we're square. Tomorrow you and me go to city hall. Then you come home."

Arianna put her fork down.

"Undid them?" Her honey voice had gone thin. "You said the lawyer was taking his time."

"Cara, it was a birthday wish."

"You said."

She picked up her water glass and threw it.

Not at him. At me.

It burst on the wall an inch from my head. Water and glass rained down the back of my neck.

"She lies about a dead baby and you take her back?" Arianna was on her feet. "I'm the one wearing the ring!"

Ottavia didn't flinch.

She took her rosary in her other hand.

"Arianna. Sit down. You'll get your turn."

Arianna sat down. Her chest was heaving.

I picked a sliver of glass out of my collar and set it on the table next to the rum cake.

"I'm not going to city hall," I said.

"You'll go."

"I'm not your wife. I'm not coming home." I looked at Ottavia, because she was the one who'd understand it. "And this baby isn't your heir."
