Chapter 7: Husbands and Wives

Summer went white.

"Ward," she said. "You're in the... you said spring."

"I got a flight."

He walked down the center aisle between the round tables, not fast, with his hands loose at his sides.

Sixty people watched him come.

Brent stood up.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Ward Delaney," Ward said, to the room more than to him. "I'm married to Summer Sorensen. We got married six years ago in May, at the county office on Third Street."

A woman at table four made a small sound.

"That's not true," Brent said. "She told me it was over. They've been separated a year, and the divorce is practically final."

"Practically?"

"She said..."

Ward turned his head toward his wife.

"Summer, did you tell him that?"

Summer had one hand over her mouth and the other holding the baby, and her eyes were going everywhere.

"Ward, baby, please. Not here."

"This is where you put it."

"Let me explain it to you at home."

"I don't think I have a home anymore," he said. "I found out from a photo."

His voice was so quiet that people leaned in.

"I'm on a ship twenty-eight days at a time. I trusted you with the house and the bank card, and I got a text from my engineer asking if I was all right."

Nobody in the room spoke.

Brent turned and looked at Summer.

I had never seen his face do what it did then.

All of the charm slid off it, and what stayed was a scared, stupid man.

"You told me the divorce was final," he said.

"It's... Brent, it was nearly..."

"You told me you were single. I bought a house."
