Chapter 14: Brennan's Mother

Alastair went down the porch steps without being asked.

He nodded to Brennan's mother, who did not nod back, and he sat in his car at the curb with the engine off.

I let her into the kitchen because she was holding a casserole and a hurt look, and I did not know which to refuse first.

She set the dish on the counter.

"Chicken and rice," she said. "He always liked it."

"I'm sure."

"May I?"

She held out her arms, and Hazel, who was standing in the doorway with the pan, looked at me.

I nodded, and Hazel handed over the baby.

Brennan's mother took her in both arms and held on.

She sat down at the table and her whole face softened.

"Look at that chin," she said. "That's a Montgomery chin."

I stood at the counter and waited.

She said nothing to me for two full minutes.

"I'm from Toledo," she said at last, still looking at the baby. "I raised my son in the Methodist church. I don't know where he learned to behave like this."

"He learned it at work and in my kitchen."

"Emmeline."

"Go on."

She lifted her eyes.

"He made a terrible mistake. I won't defend it. But he's the father of this child, and a father belongs in a house with his daughter."

"He belongs in a cell, and he'll have one."

"That's what I came about."

She said it quickly, as if she had practiced it in the car.

"If you drop the charges, Brennan will withdraw the petition today. He'll pay back the money. He'll see a counselor. And you will not have to stand in a courtroom on Monday and be looked at."
