Chapter 12: The Safe

The Manolakis warehouse was never quite empty on a Saturday, but after the market closed at four it came close.

I went in through the loading dock with Nikos a step behind me and a flashlight in his hand.

He had the key to the side door and the code to the dock, and he used both without a word.

I had asked him to bring me.

I had said, "I want to see the desk," and he had said, "I know what you're going to find."

"Then tell me," I had said.

"I can't," he had said.

"I'm not sure.

"I want you to see it with your own eyes, and I want to see it with mine."

We went up a steel stair to a glass office over the warehouse floor.

It was dark and cold.

He turned on the green desk lamp.

The light fell on a heavy oak desk with a brass lock on the bottom drawer, and a safe set into the wall behind it.

"You know the combination," I said.

"I've known it for ten years," he said.

"Have you ever opened it?"

"Never.

"He has never asked me to."

"Open it."

He did not move.

"Kali, this is his."

"Everything in this house is his," I said.

"I'm his wife.

"Open it, Nikos."

He knelt in front of the safe and turned the dial in a slow even rhythm.
