Chapter 20: Nineteen Days

Katja's POV

On the nineteenth night at Marit's, I was cross-legged on her couch with the fox book across my knees when somebody knocked.

It was a soft knock, a polite one.

Marit looked at me over her ramen.

"I'm not expecting anyone."

"Neither am I."

She went to the door in her socks, and I heard the chain slide.

Then I heard nothing.

"Katja," Marit said, in an odd voice. "Come here."

Hester stood on the landing.

She was wearing a raincoat I had never seen, and no pearls, and her silver hair was flat from the weather.

She looked like any woman of sixty-one who had been standing outside a building for a long time.

"May I come in?" she said.

"No," said Marit.

"It's all right." I got up. "Say it here."

Hester looked at me, and at the hall behind me, and at Marit with her arms crossed.

"I've lost the house," she said. "The Foundation has asked for my resignation. My lawyer won't return calls."

"I'm sorry to hear it."

"Are you?"

"A little."

"You think it's funny."

"I don't," I said. "I think you built it with a pen, and it fell the way things built with a pen fall."

Her mouth worked.

"I came to ask you to speak to my son."

"About what?"

"He'll listen to you. He won't see me. He's had the locks changed at the Lake Forest house." Her voice trembled, and she steadied it. "I'm his mother, Katja. Whatever I did, I did for the family."

"You did it for the money."
