Chapter 13: The Envelope

The lab's envelope came to the boatyard on Thursday at eleven.

Nils had ordered the test, so the result went to him.

Birgit decided where it would be opened.

"At lunch," she told him on the phone, and he repeated it to me in the parking lot, because he had asked me to come. "She says if it's going to be said, it's going to be said in front of the crew, so nobody can call it hidden."

"She thinks it will say you're the father," I said.

"I know what she thinks."

Every Thursday since Nils was a boy, the yard had stopped at noon for chowder in the long shop under the rafters.

Thirty men and women in canvas and fleece sat at the plank tables with their bowls.

Birgit stood at the end in her good coat and pearls, and Kristin sat beside her with a blanket over her knees.

Pia had come with me. She leaned against a stack of cedar planks and chewed a toothpick.

Anders stood by the door with his hands in his jacket pockets.

He hadn't looked at me since I came in.

That was how I knew something was wrong.

Nils stood on an overturned crate in the middle of the floor, holding a white envelope in both hands.

"I'm not a speaker," he said. "I asked for this, so I'll read it."

Nobody ate.

He tore the flap open and unfolded two pages.

I watched his eyes go down the first one.
