Chapter 6: Guess the Date

Kristin held out her phone to Nils with both hands.

"Look all you want," she said. "I have nothing to hide from you."

Nils took it.

He read the date on the scan for a long time.

I could see his thumb moving, counting, and then stopping short.

"It says thirteen weeks," he said.

"It says thirteen weeks and zero days, because they measured me big." Kristin put her hand on her stomach. "The tech said the baby's just ahead. Some babies are. You know I'm tall, Nils."

"The date's still October 6th."

"Honey." She began to cry, without any sound at all. "You asked me to do this with you. You said you'd be there. And now you're taking her side?"

Birgit stood up so fast her cup rattled.

"That is enough," she said. "I will not have a pregnant woman interrogated in this family's conference room, over a number on a screen. Nils, sit down."

Nils sat without a word.

I watched him do it.

Birgit turned to me with her smile back in place.

"Britta, you're welcome to collect your things," she said. "The shower's tomorrow at the boathouse. Do come, if you can behave."

"I'm not invited," I said.

"You're invited," said Kristin, wiping her eyes. "I asked her to. I want you there, Bri. You're the one person I want in the photos."

I looked at Anders, still in the doorway.

He gave me the smallest shake of his head.

I understood him. Not yet.

So I said, "I'll bring a gift."
