Chapter 22: Obstacle Detected, Again
The screen showed a floor plan of my house, with thin blue lines wandering across it.
Two hundred people in black tie looked up at it.
"That's a map of the Aldous penthouse," Willem said, from the wings, into a microphone. His voice shook. "It's from my company's robot vacuum."
"I'm not sure why we're looking at a vacuum," Linnea said.
"Because it keeps a log," Willem said. "Every night, at three, it cleans the foot of the main staircase."
A date and time came up on the screen: 3:01 a.m.
Below it, the log read: Obstacle, ceramic, heavy. Rerouted.
"Linnea Frost says she fell down those stairs at seven past two," Willem said. "She says she lay at the bottom until six-thirty. The vacuum has a heat sensor. It reads a body at forty feet."
"It read nothing."
Linnea laughed, a short bright laugh.
"A machine can't prove I wasn't hurt."
"Excuse me," said a calm woman's voice through the ballroom speakers. "Obstacle detected."
The room jumped.
Jax stood at the soundboard with one hand on a fader and his face perfectly innocent.
"It's got a good voice," he said to the nearest table. "It says it to everyone."
"Excuse me," said the speakers. "Obstacle detected."
Somebody started to laugh and then thought better of it.
"What was the obstacle?" a man shouted.
"I'm glad you asked," said my mother-in-law.
She rang her silver bell.
The footman came down the center aisle with a silver tray held high, and on the tray, under the chandeliers, sat a white casserole dish with a chip in the rim.
He set it on the edge of the stage.
