Chapter 18: Pot Roast
Laura's POV
Daniel told me about the mud on Friday night, at the kitchen table, with the lights off.
He set the pink phone case between us and said Claire had named the place before anyone told her.
I listened to all of it with my hands flat on the wood.
"Why didn't you tell me yesterday?" I said.
"I wanted to be sure."
"That is exactly what you said about Dr. Ames."
"I know." He didn't look away. "That's why I'm telling you now, with the whole thing, and not tomorrow."
He had waited one night and brought proof, and I decided that was not the same as hiding it.
Then I picked up his phone and read Claire's invitation, and I typed back: We'd love to come.
"Laura."
"She wants us at her table. She thinks she's about to win."
"And?"
"And she carries a bag everywhere. Teddy said she writes in her notebook in her purse." I put the phone down. "The choir teacher said a flip phone. A flip phone that nobody here has ever seen her use."
He understood a second later.
"You want to look in her purse."
"I want you to keep her talking."
Winnie took the kids on Sunday, and said, "Go get her," and handed me a thermos of coffee for the car.
Claire's apartment smelled of pot roast and rosemary.
She had set the table with the good plates, and the candles our mother had left her.
She hugged Daniel, and she hugged me, and she held on a second too long.
"I'm so glad you came," she said into my hair. "I've been sick."
"I know."
"I never wanted any of this."
"I know you didn't."
She wiped her eyes and led us to our chairs.
We ate.
She talked about the weather, and about the new hygienist at her office, and she passed Daniel the salt without being asked.
It was a perfect imitation of every Sunday we had ever had.
