Chapter 23: In My Name
Daniel came to Winnie's door at nine that night with a manila envelope and no coat.
Winnie took one look at him, said "I'll bake," and went into the kitchen and shut the door.
He stood on the porch under the yellow light.
"Come in," I said.
"I can't. I have to say it out here."
"Say what?"
He held out the envelope.
"It's the deed to the house. A lawyer friend drew it up this afternoon. It's all in your name, and the savings, and the car."
I didn't take it.
"Laura, if Friday goes wrong, and I lose my job, and she takes the kids' file to the county, you will need every bit of this and none of me." His voice was steady, and his hand wasn't. "You came to the kitchen because you were angry. I understand. I won't hold you to it."
"You think I came to the kitchen out of anger."
"I think you came because you had nobody else that night."
"Daniel."
"I lied to you for three years, and you should be able to leave whenever you want. If I give you everything, you can." He swallowed. "I'd rather you had a way out and stayed than had none."
For three years he had decided what I could carry, and he was deciding again, more gently.
I took the envelope from him, and I set it on the porch rail, and I put both hands on his face.
"I'm coming home," I said. "Tonight. Not because I'm angry."
"Laura."
"Because I choose to. Say you heard me."
His eyes filled. "I heard you."
"Winnie has the kids another night. She's told me three times."
He kissed me on the porch, on Winnie's porch, with the light on, and I could hear her pretending not to listen through the door.
We drove home with my hand in his on the gearshift.
