Chapter 11: Coffee and Nothing Else

On Thursday evening Thatcher locked the cafe door behind us and turned the sign to CLOSED.

The window lettering was finished.

From the inside, in the last light, my own letters ran backward across the glass.

I had been holding a sentence in my mouth for an hour.

"Before you say anything kind again," I said, "I need to tell you something."

Thatcher set down the roll of tape.

"All right."

"I'm still married. I'm pregnant. I'm about to sit across a table from my husband and his best friend. Whatever this is, it's nothing until the divorce is final."

He looked at me.

"I was going to ask if you wanted the last cracker."

My face went hot, and I wanted to disappear into the floor.

"Oh."

"But I'm glad you said it." His mouth tipped up at one corner, and he kept his eyes on mine. "It's good to know where the lines are."

"And not even then, unless I say so."

"Understood. Coffee and nothing else."

"And ginger tea."

"That's coffee-adjacent. I'll allow it."

I laughed, and he reached out and straightened the strap of my bag where it had slipped off my shoulder.

His fingers touched the side of my neck for less time than it takes to say so.

Neither of us mentioned it.

I walked out into the cold with the place on my neck still warm, and I told myself it was the ginger.
