Chapter 16: Closing Time
Thatcher's POV
On Monday morning the man from the hallway walked into my cafe at ten past seven.
I had been open for a week, and I knew every regular by their order.
He wasn't one.
He wore a clean shirt and no tie, and he had the look of a man who had slept in a parked car.
"You're Thatcher," he said.
"I am. What can I get you?"
"I've seen your name on the invoices. For the window lettering." He didn't sit. "You were at her sister's door yesterday."
"I was."
"Are you with her?"
I put down the towel.
There were two customers by the window and a woman waiting for a muffin, and all three had gone politely deaf.
"She's a client," I said. "She's also a friend, I hope. That's all I've been allowed to be, and I've been glad of it."
"She's carrying my child."
"I know."
"I'm her husband."
"I know that too."
He gripped the edge of the counter.
"Then you know it isn't right. You can't just step into..."
"Cory." I kept my voice level, because the woman with the muffin had stopped pretending. "Nobody stepped in. You left her at home five Octobers and she finally went somewhere."
He looked at me.
I thought he might say something sharp, and I wasn't sure I would mind.
He didn't.
He took out his wallet, put a ten on the counter for a coffee he hadn't ordered, and walked out into the cold.
I made it anyway and drank it standing at the register.
I had spent the whole weekend not asking myself what I'd do when he came back.
