Chapter 24: Say My Name
I folded the note, set the album on the floor, and turned over.
Nate was asleep on his back with one arm flung over his head, still smelling faintly of rose petals and frosting.
The ring on his hand caught the streetlamp.
I put my palm flat on his chest and felt it rise and fall.
"Nate."
"Mm."
"Wake up."
He opened one eye.
"Is it your mother?"
"No. She's fine. She's asleep." I swallowed. "I need to tell you something."
He sat up so fast the blanket slid off the mattress.
"Okay."
"I stopped being angry."
He didn't move.
"I think it was last week, at the diner. You were standing in the pit with soap up to your elbows, and I couldn't find it anymore." My voice shook. "I kept looking for it, because I thought I should still have it. It wasn't there."
"Roxy."
"I forgive you."
He put his hands over his face.
I heard him breathe in, one long ragged breath, and then another.
"You don't have to say anything," I said.
"I'm not going to."
He pulled me into his lap, and I wrapped my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist, and we stayed that way for a long time.
When he lifted his head, his face was wet, and he was smiling.
"Say it again."
"I forgive you."
"Once more."
"Nate."
"I'm greedy."
I kissed him.
It started slowly and didn't stay that way.
He eased me back onto the mattress, and I pulled the last hairpin out of my hair, because I'd forgotten it was there.
We tried to be quiet, because there were two girls asleep six feet away.
