Chapter 14: Chapter 14

The night dispatch office at the Strip District dock yard was a glass box on stilts, with a space heater and a view of eleven loading bays.

Colin sat at the old desk in a headset, in his shirtsleeves, and the tuxedo jacket hung on a nail.

The overnight dispatcher he had relieved stood by the door with her coat on.

"He said it was a favor," she told me on her way out. "He's good, so I said yes."

"Thank you."

"Chair." She nodded, a little stiffly, and left.

I shut the door and the noise of the yard dropped away.

Colin took the headset off and set it on the desk.

"Sit," he said. "Please. It's not a trick."

I took the other chair.

It creaked, and the seat was still warm from the dispatcher before him.

"I'm not here to say I forgive you," he said. "I don't know if I do."

"I didn't come for that."

"Good." He rubbed his eyes. "I walked six blocks and threw up in a planter."

"Colin."

"I'm telling you so you know it was real. I felt it."

"What I keep landing on is not the list. I could live with the list."

"What, then?"
