"Say it," I said.

Roan turned the engine off, and the yard went very quiet around the truck.

"I won't leave through a side door again," he said. "Not at dawn, not at midnight, not with my jacket over my arm."

"Monday morning I want to walk through the front doors of your tower beside you."

"In front of the desk, and the guards, and every one of your people."

"I'm thirty-six years old, and I'd like to be seen wanting you."

My throat tightened.

For two years I had gone in and out of rooms as someone's quiet wife, and then as the Chair with a secret.

Nobody had ever asked to be seen.

"Yes," I said.

"Yes to Monday?"

"Yes to Monday. Now drive."

He started the engine without another word, and he drove too fast over the bridge.

His apartment was dark, and the city lay under the glass.

He shut the door and put his back against it and looked at me.

"Come here," he said.

I crossed the floor, and he took my jaw in one broad hand and kissed me slowly.

My green dress had a long zipper, and he drew it all the way down and let the silk fall around my feet.
