Colin had a duffel bag packed by the door of the night office, and the petition lay open on the desk under the lamp.

He stood when I came in, and it was a different kind of standing than before.

There was no hope in it, and no apology, only a man ready for a long day.

"Thank you for coming at one in the morning," he said.

"Roan's in the truck. He'll wait."

"He's decent."

"I know."

"That's not an insult." Colin almost smiled. "I'd just like it on the record that I noticed."

He pushed a second folder across the desk.

"Before I sign, there are terms."

"I wrote the petition. There aren't any terms."

"They're mine."

I opened the folder.

Inside was a one-page list in his square capitals, signed at the bottom.

First, the forty-one thousand dollars, already delivered.

Second, the house key and the car, already returned to his mother.

Third, his tuxedo rental, his bus fare to Cincinnati, and the cost of two weeks of orientation pay he said he had not earned.
