Chapter 8: The Radio Host

The radio host agreed to meet me in a Detroit diner at six in the morning, and she brought her own coffee.

"I don't trust diner coffee," she said. "Or men who talk about their wives."

She was forty, with a long silver-blonde braid and a voice I knew from the radio.

Warm, low, a little rough.

It was the voice that had called Brendan a storyteller in a hundred tagged photos.

She slid into the booth across from me and Maisie, who had come as backup in her tour vest and a ball cap pulled low.

"You're her," the host said. "The muse."

"I'm the wife."

"I'm the other one." She laughed, hollow. "Number two, apparently. Maisie said there were three."

Maisie looked at her plate.

"There might be a fourth," she said. "I haven't finished scrolling."

The host stirred her coffee with a long spoon.

She was not crying.

She had done her crying a long time ago.

"I had him eight months," she said.

"He came on my show to promote the book, and I thought, finally, a man who says the right things. After the interview he asked me to dinner. He said his wife had left him, and was living in a hotel in Santa Fe, and wouldn't see him."

"Santa Fe," I said.

"I know. Nobody leaves for Santa Fe." She pushed the sugar jar a half inch. "He told me you were cold."

"Cold."

"A brilliant writer who'd stopped feeling anything after the accident. He said it was like living with a beautiful ghost. He cried when he told me." She breathed out.

"I held him for an hour. I thought I was healing someone."

I felt my jaw clench.

"And the texts?" Maisie said. "What did he send you?"

The host took out her phone.

She had a folder on it, she said, labeled "Evidence of my stupidity."

She turned the screen toward us.

There were hundreds of messages.
