Chapter 11: The Kitchen Annex
By morning Ji-han had decided not to ask the Leader anything.
A man who was afraid of the answer should be careful about the question.
He told himself the Leader had dreamed of the dead, as soldiers do.
He told himself that a man who wore a famous name might very well apologize to it in his sleep.
He told himself that all the way to the kitchen annex.
He found the Leader there at dawn, in shirtsleeves, with his left arm in a sling, frying eggs.
The annex was a low, warm room behind the Cedar Court.
It had a clay stove, a rack of copper pans, and a scarred table where the servants ate.
Soo-bin was perched on a flour barrel, eating an apple and giving advice.
"You're burning it," Soo-bin said.
"I'm not burning it."
"Master Leader, I grew up in a kitchen. That egg is dead."
"It's crisp."
"It's a coal."
The Leader looked at the egg.
He looked at Ji-han.
"I may be burning it," he admitted.
Ji-han laughed, and the ache in his chest eased half an inch.
The Leader cooked one-handed.
He cracked eggs without looking.
He tasted the soup with the back of a wooden spoon.
He set out the bowls in order without thinking about it, the guest first, then himself, then the attendant.
