Hyeong Jeong-seok was a very good liar, and Ji-han had the pleasure of watching him do it for a full quarter of an hour.
The Hall reopened at noon with the sun pouring through the high lattice, and Hyeong spoke first, because the elders let him.
He did not mention the Rite.
He spoke of the plum tree.
"A boy in the Black Lotus's own black and red," he said, softly, with his rosary turning.
"Dead in the leaves, killed by the Leader's husband."
"Who now stands before us and tells us he remembers everything."
"I do," Ji-han said.
"Then you remember why you killed him."
"He shot at my husband."
"He was a cult soldier. One of yours. You silenced him before he could say who sent him."
Hyeong spread his hands.
"I do not say it with pleasure. I say it because a man of the Lotus will always choose the Lotus."
It was a good trap.
If Ji-han said the boy was not a cult soldier, he would need to prove it.
If he said the boy was, he confessed.
He looked across the Hall.
Tae-san stood where he had stood yesterday, veiled and enormous, with his hands loose.
He gave Ji-han the smallest nod.
Ji-han took a rolled paper out of his coat.
