Chapter 8: The Lotus Ring
Ji-han let the wooden box go.
It was the hardest thing he had done all week.
A man who kept secrets from his husband had no right to ask about anyone else's.
Maeng Soo-hwa sent a message by way of Soo-bin, written on the back of a pastry wrapper.
Terrace. Sunset. Come alone or I'll scream.
He went alone.
The Cheolbong terrace hung off the mountain.
A long drop opened on one side of it, and a red sunset on the other.
Maeng sat on the parapet with her legs dangling over nothing, eating a skewer of roast chestnuts.
"You look well-loved," she said.
"Don't start."
"I'm happy for you. Honestly. Your face has color."
Ji-han came and stood beside her, with the wind pulling at his braid.
"I want the prisoners," he said.
She raised an eyebrow.
"The three the Vice-Leader dragged in. The swordsman, the cook, the boy with the broken hand. They go home with you, or there's no deal."
"There's no deal anyway. You haven't said yes."
"I haven't said no."
"You said it in the garden."
"I'm saying something different now."
She studied him for a long moment, and the chestnut stopped halfway to her mouth.
"You really do like it here," she said softly.
Ji-han didn't answer.
"All right. I'll ask for the prisoners as a gesture of peace."
"Your husband can't refuse in front of his council. That's smart, by the way. That's a Lotus move."
"I'm not doing it as the Lotus."
"You're doing it as the Left Hand. Don't lie to me, Ji-han."
"I've known you since you were nine and ate soap because somebody told you it was cheese."
