Chapter 9: Plum Ridge
Plum Ridge in autumn smelled of wet leaves and horse sweat and the sourness of men pretending to be friends.
They rode out at dawn, forty Alliance riders and one Black Lotus envoy.
The Leader rode at the head with the veil hat tied down against the wind.
Ji-han rode at his left knee, on a grey mare the stable master swore was gentle.
She was not gentle.
She and Ji-han came to an understanding by the second mile.
Maeng Soo-hwa rode behind them, whistling a cult marching song until a sect head asked her politely to stop.
"Sorry," she said. "Nerves."
Hyeong Jeong-seok rode directly behind her, on a white gelding, smiling at the trees.
Ji-han did not like that smile.
By midmorning they had flushed two deer and a pheasant and a great deal of local tension.
The riders spread out along the ridge in a loose line.
Somebody blew a horn.
Ji-han reined in beside a stand of old plum trees to let the mare drink.
The Leader drew up next to him, close enough that their knees touched.
"You're a fine rider," the Leader said.
"I fell off three times in the first mile."
"You fell off beautifully."
Ji-han laughed.
That was when he heard it.
It was a tiny sound, the creak of a bowstring under tension, from the branches above them.
He knew that sound.
He had made it himself, with his own bow, in a hundred ambushes.
"Down!" he shouted.
He threw himself sideways, and the arrow cracked into the tree trunk where his head had been.
A second arrow came out of the leaves.
