Chapter 16: Preston's POV

Preston's POV

I told two women I would be somewhere at nine o'clock on Monday morning.

I told Aimée I would be in Brookline, holding her hand.

I told Solène I would be in a Boston restaurant with her and her mother, making the baby official.

I meant both. That is the part nobody will believe.

On the beach I stood on the dune and watched my wife tell my oldest friend no.

She said it flat, with her hands open.

I had never once heard her tell anyone no.

Then Solène turned to me with her chin up and said, in French, "Choisis."

Aimée didn't say a word to me.

She looked at my face for a long moment, and then she went up the beach to Rémy's truck.

I took the last ferry to Hyannis.

I stood at the rail on the open deck while the island shrank behind me.

Once I saw her through the cabin window, with her head against the shoulder of the man who was driving her.

My car was waiting in the long-term lot, where I had left it on Friday.
