Chapter 13: The Price of Silence
The voicemail ended, and the shed was suddenly very loud with rain.
"What money?" I said.
Terrence sat up on the cushions and straightened his wet shirt.
"All of it," he said.
"I told you I can't lie to you, so I'm going to say it in order."
I pulled my dress down over my knees and waited.
"The winter after your wedding, I walked into the parking garage stairwell at the office."
"Prescott was in there with a girl from the fifth floor, a temp, twenty-three years old."
"Her name was Taryn."
"I told him to end it, and he laughed at me."
"I went to Dad, and Dad said Prescott would grow out of it."
"So I held it for almost a year, because every time I opened my mouth, I saw your face."
"At Christmas I told them both that you'd hear it from me by New Year's."
"You went to help Mom with dessert, and I said it across the table."
"I remember you left," I said.
"I remember you didn't come back."
"Dad took me into his study before the pie," said Terrence.
