Chapter 20: Only One Heir
Ernest did not look at his wife.
He looked at the room.
"No," he said.
"I did not know."
"I learned of that child at my own dinner table on the first of April, along with my daughter-in-law."
"My son kept it from me, as he kept it from everyone."
He said it smoothly, with sorrow in it.
I waited for the click, and nothing came.
It was a lie, and a big one, but it wasn't aimed at me.
He knew I knew, and he didn't care what I thought.
He was lying to the three hundred people at their tables.
That was fine.
They didn't need a click.
They needed a picture.
"Is that so," said a voice, not loudly.
Joan stood up from her chair at the head table.
Her gray gown rustled.
Her pearls swung forward the way they always did, and she steadied them with one hand.
The hall turned to look at her, and I heard her draw a breath that shook.
"Ernest," she said.
"Sit down, Joan," said Ernest.
"I won't."
It was the quietest word I had ever heard her say, and it cracked through the room.
