Chapter 21: The Check
Terrence stood up from Table 31.
His chair went back with a soft bump against the kitchen door.
He did not look at his father, or at the cameras, or at the stage.
He walked to the middle of the dance floor, where three hundred people could see him, and he stopped.
"That check is real," he said.
His voice was not loud, but the room was so quiet it didn't need to be.
"I took it, and I'm not going to ask this room to call that anything else."
He put his hand in his jacket and took out a long envelope.
"This is what's left."
A woman at the nearest table put her hand to her chest.
The man with the gray beard took off his glasses and held them in his lap.
Nobody in that hall had ever heard a Nordquist say what he was ashamed of.
He crossed the floor to the stage in his work boots and his one good jacket.
He climbed the three steps.
He walked past Taryn and the crying girl and set the envelope on the podium, right in front of his father's hands.
