Chapter 9: The Boathouse
He carried me up the stairs.
I told him he didn't have to, with his bad leg.
He said it was a good leg when it had something to carry.
At the top he kicked his own bedroom door open with his boot.
The room was big and plain, with a low ceiling and a window on three sides.
Beyond the glass the lake lay black and silver under a half moon.
There was an unmade bed in the middle of it.
I liked that it was unmade.
It meant he wasn't a man who had planned this.
He set me on my feet beside it and stood there with his hands open, breathing hard.
"Kristen," he said.
"I'm all yours to say no to."
"I know," I said.
I took hold of the hem of his sweatshirt with both hands and pulled it up over his head.
He let me.
He had a broad, hard chest with dark hair on it.
A long pale scar ran along his ribs, and his tan stopped at the elbows.
I put my palms flat against him, and I felt his heart slam into them.
"You're shaking," I said.
"I've wanted this for five years," said Terrence.
"I'm allowed to shake."
I looked up at him.
He had said it so plainly.
It went through me.
He had kept his promise already, and he'd given me the truth without being asked.
I took my dress off over my head.
He made a sound.
His eyes went down me slowly, from my mouth to my breasts in the plain cotton bra.
They moved over my stomach and my thighs, and then back up.
"God," he said.
"Look at you."
"Look at me, then," I said.
"Put your hands on me."
He did.
He put one hand on my waist and the other behind my neck, and he kissed me until my knees went.
I had never known what it was like to be kissed by a man who wasn't thinking about what he'd get.
He kissed me.
He unhooked my bra and pushed it off my shoulders.
He filled his hands with my breasts and dragged his thumbs over my nipples until they ached.
I arched into him with a groan I did not recognize as mine.
"Beautiful," he said against my throat.
"You're so soft."
"I've dreamed about the sound you make."
"Then make me do it again," I said.
He laughed, low, and picked me up and laid me back on the bed.
I watched him strip off his jeans.
He was big all over, with his cock hard against his stomach and thick enough that my mouth went dry.
He saw me looking.
"Problem?" he said, with a crooked half smile.
"Not one," I said, and held out both arms.
"Come here."
He came down over me on his forearms.
