Chapter 18: Together

Beck came in at two in the morning and found the lights on.

Lena sat at the kitchen table with the letter flat in front of her.

He stopped in the doorway with the keys in his hand.

"You weren't supposed to see that."

"I know."

"Lena."

"Sit down, Beck."

He sat.

She turned the page around so it faced him.

"Tell me what it says."

"It says I'm done."

"Why?"

"Because Donald has a ledger with your name on it, and I have a folder with his. He's going to say you bought Stanton's spot, and the only way to stop him is a voice louder than his, in front of the building."

"A voice that gets you suspended for life."

"Yes."

"That's your whole plan."

"Yes."

"You get nothing out of it," she said slowly.

"I get the letter read."

"You lose the contract. The C. Your pension. Nine million a year."

"I don't want his nine million."

She looked at him.

"You hate him," Lena said. "That's what I thought."

"I do."

"I thought that was why you were helping me."

"It's a good enough reason to help anyone."

"But you're not doing this for that."

"No."

"Then why?"

He didn't answer for a moment.

Then he said, rough and plain, "Because you stood in a room full of men who wouldn't look at you, and you didn't look away. I want to be one of them who looked."

Her eyes filled.

"You idiot," she said.

"I know."

"You wrote the date on it."

"I know."

"You were going to leave me a note."

"I was going to leave you the apartment," Beck said. "The lease is in your name as of Monday. It's in the drawer."

She got up and walked around the table and sat in his lap.

He stiffened, and then his arms came around her so tightly it hurt.
