Chapter 6: The Wife's Seat

On Wednesday at noon, the Wolves families' luncheon was held in the arena's club room, under a banner that read Family First.

Fourteen women sat at round tables with chicken salad and iced tea.

Amber Dunning stood at the head table with a microphone, welcoming everyone in a pale pink suit.

"We're so lucky to be a family," she was saying. "Especially this season, when we all need to be kind to each other."

The side door opened.

Lena Sadler walked in wearing the dress she had worn to the gala.

She had washed it twice in Susanna's sink, and she wore it on purpose.

Fourteen forks stopped moving.

"Lena," Amber said, and her voice stayed pleasant. "We're about to eat. You're welcome to join us if you'll behave."

"Thank you," Lena said.

She walked to the head table, took the chair with Amber's name card, and sat down in it.

Amber's smile twitched.

"That's my seat."

"It's the wife's seat," Lena said. "I'm still the wife."

The room made a small, shocked sound.

Lena looked at the women.

She knew every one of them.

"Before the salad," she said, "I have one question."

"Lena, this isn't the time," a tall woman near the front said.

"You drove me home from the Christmas party," Lena said. "You told me Stanton looked tired, and I should make him soup."
