Chapter 20: The Night Before
Patrick's POV
On the night before, I left the lamp on.
For three years I had touched no one, and before that I had made love, when I made it at all, in the dark and by habit.
I wanted to see her.
Edie sat on the edge of the bed in the blue sheets with her hair down.
She had her knees pulled up and her arms around them.
She had been quiet all evening, in the way she got when she was counting.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Running the day." She didn't look up. "Doors, gate, sound man, chair. If the gate sticks, I stall. If the judge goes for the exit, you stop him."
"Edie."
"I'm a night nurse. I plan for the worst hour."
I knelt on the floor in front of her.
I took her feet in my hands, one and then the other, and pressed my thumbs into the arch.
Her breath came out unsteady.
"Stop planning," I said.
"I can't."
"Then let me do it for you."
I kissed her ankle.
I kissed the inside of her knee, and the soft place above it, and the inside of her thigh.
She let her knees fall open.
I had wanted this woman since the first time I saw her in a hospital corridor.
