Chapter 11: The Receipt

She was in the kitchen at six the next morning, standing at the counter in her work blazer with a cup of coffee she hadn't touched.

I came in through the back door with my ribs taped and my hair wet.

We looked at each other.

"Pity kiss," I said.

"Don't."

"I'm only checking the label."

"Floyd." She put the cup down. "I didn't come in here to talk about that."

"Okay."

"I came in because I did the math on the way to the depot last night, on every lie anyone has told me this month."

She pulled a folded paper from her blazer pocket and set it on the counter between us.

It was the disbursement form with my signature.

"Your phone," she said. "Show me the account."

I took it out and opened the app.

I turned the screen toward her without saying anything.

She read it, and her lips moved a little as she counted the zeros.

"It's all there," she said.

"Every dollar. I told you I hadn't touched it."

"There's no withdrawal. There's no transfer. Not even a coffee."

"I told you I didn't want it, Mer."

"You said it. I didn't believe you." She pushed her hair back with a shaking hand. "Someone told me you were asking for money, and I believed that instead, because it was easier than believing you didn't fight for me on purpose."

"Who told you?"

She opened her mouth.

She shut it again.

"Mer."

"My father's lawyer sent me the form," she said slowly. "But that's not where I first heard it. It was a month ago."
