Chapter 22: The List, Reversed
By the following Saturday the flat on the fifty-second floor had four chairs.
Lu Ning had bought them, in a rage, from a shop in Pudong.
She had walked in and found her brother's boyfriend eating noodles standing up.
"Nobody sits on the floor in a home," she had announced. "It's a home now. Sit."
Yan had sat.
He sat at the head of the new table with a dish towel over his shoulder.
A pan of something grey stood in front of him.
The rice cooker had been unboxed.
It was the first time it had been used.
"It's congee," he said.
"It's glue," said Lu Ning.
"It will improve with salt."
"It will improve with a priest," said Lu Wen, and ate a second spoonful with great courage.
The door chime sounded.
Qiao Min came in with her tablet, took one look at the pan, and put a bag of takeaway on the table without comment.
Behind her came a wheelchair.
Old Mr. Yan sat in it in his best cardigan, with a tin of sesame candy on his knee.
The nurse behind him looked tired of arguing.
"I discharged myself," he announced. "Nobody can keep a man of my age in a hospital over a weekend."
He squinted at his grandson.
"Shiliang, you've got thin. Boy, come here."
Lu Wen went.
The old man took his hand in both of his.
"They tell me you read the contract aloud," he said.
"I did, Old Mr. Yan," said Lu Wen.
"In front of the Minister and the cameras and that fool Gao."
"Yes."
"Good." The old man patted the hand. "You will call me Yeye. I'm told that is what is done."
Lu Wen opened his mouth and found he could not do it at once.
"Yeye," he said, finally, very quietly.
"There. It isn't so hard."
