Chapter 7: What the Agency Boss Wanted
The agency boss sat at the kitchen table in a camel coat with a box of pastries open in front of him.
He was forty-nine, round-faced and gentle in the voice, and he had once paid for Lu Wen's first suit.
Lu Ning stood at the sink with her arms folded and her phone, Lu Wen saw, wedged upright in the fruit bowl behind the oranges.
She gave him a very small nod.
"Little Wen," the agency boss said warmly. "Sit, sit. You look tired. They're working you too hard."
"Why are you here, sir?"
"To fix things."
The agency boss spread his hands.
"A misunderstanding with the bank, and a sad one with the board. Let me explain, and then you'll thank me."
Lu Wen sat down across from him and did not touch the pastries.
"The guarantee was withdrawn because Vice Chairman Gao's office asked me to withdraw it," the agency boss said. "They were upset about some irregularities in your work."
"What irregularities?"
"Cheng Ao tells me you've been adjusting register. Softening, in plain words." The agency boss shrugged. "Every interpreter does a little. I'd never hold it against you."
Lu Ning's eyes went to Lu Wen and back to the oranges.
"What does the vice chairman want?" Lu Wen asked.
"Something very small," said the agency boss. "A quality record."
He counted it on his fingers.
"Each night, you send his office a comparison of what the Chairman said and what you gave the Minister."
"And?" said Lu Wen.
"And you sign one page for me, dated from the first day. It says you've been adjusting register at your own discretion."
"At my own discretion," Lu Wen repeated.
"Without instruction," the agency boss said. "That's all."
"And if I sign?"
The agency boss smiled, relieved, and patted the table.
